Pink Shirt Day

Today was anti-bullying day and our class was showing our support by wearing something pink. My son came down with the stomach flu last night and I was sad to miss this day but Cannon's Mom was in and she taught my lesson for me!

Students were shown this article:

and then this article:

http://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/2012/12/21/hashtag-bullying (which I have been saving since December).

Students were to discuss their thoughts on these articles and then complete an activity in their Tribe about cyber-bullying. Many students in our class have a Facebook account and we had a great conversation in our Class Meeting about the importance of monitoring what is posted, particularly in the form of video.

Tomorrow we are going to discuss what the definition of bullying is and how that compares to the trials and tribulations of pre-adolescence. I've noticed that children at this age tend to mistake a disagreement with a friend or a rude comment by a peer as bullying, which is not the case. We will deconstruct this concept together as a class.

I love that we can speak so openly and honestly about this issue in our class. The maturity of most students is very impressive and much appreciated.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Mrs. Sinclair sent me an email about Reading Buddies from today and she took the time to compliment Rylee and Nathan for their efforts with her students. Amazing job!! Thanks for making our class proud.
